Health & Safety Salary Guide 2026: What Roles Are Really Paying

An honest look at indicative UK salary ranges for HSE roles in 2026, what actually moves the number, and what we're seeing in live construction and infrastructure vacancies.

Health and safety is a profession people join for the right reasons. Almost everyone we speak with talks about purpose, culture and the chance to make a genuine difference long before they mention money.

But money still matters. It's one of the things you weigh when you're deciding whether to move, and one of the things employers get wrong most often when they're trying to hire. So here's an honest look at what the market is actually paying in 2026, and, just as importantly, what moves the number.

A health warning about job titles

Job titles in our profession are close to meaningless as a guide to seniority or pay.

One organisation's “Health & Safety Advisor” is a site-based role supporting a project team. Another's carries genuine strategic weight, reports high into the business, and pays double. “Manager” might mean managing people, or managing a region, a function, or a single large site with no direct reports at all.

So treat every figure below as a guide, not a rule. What actually determines pay is the scope of the role, the risk profile of the business, and the size and complexity of what you're responsible for, not the words on the job advert.

Indicative UK salary ranges, 2026

Health & Safety Coordinator / Administrator — £28,000 to £38,000

Typically an entry point into the profession. Administering ISO systems, coordinating training, maintaining records, supporting the wider team. Formal safety qualifications often aren't essential, though a NEBOSH Certificate is increasingly common.

Health & Safety Advisor — £35,000 to £50,000

The core operational role. A NEBOSH General Certificate is usually expected; Tech IOSH is common. The upper end of this range sits in higher-risk sectors: construction, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy. Roles requiring travel often add a car or car allowance of around £5,000.

Senior Health & Safety Advisor — £45,000 to £60,000

Usually found in larger organisations. Often involves mentoring or supervising advisors, or holding responsibility for a more complex site or contract.

Health & Safety Manager — £50,000 to £70,000

Doesn't necessarily mean managing people. It may mean owning a region, a function or a major site. A NEBOSH Diploma is widely expected at this level. Car or car allowance is common, along with a bonus, often around 10%.

Senior Health & Safety Manager — £65,000 to £85,000

Typically a team of two or more, or multiple sites, in a larger business. Often a stepping stone into senior leadership. External hires at this level are usually expected to be at CertIOSH level or above.

Head of Health & Safety — £80,000 to £110,000

Leading the function and setting strategy. In mid-sized or lower-risk organisations, this is often the most senior safety role. Packages usually include a meaningful car allowance and a bonus in the region of 15%.

Health & Safety Director — £100,000 to £150,000+

At the top end, ranges widen enormously. In large, high-hazard or listed businesses: oil and gas, nuclear, major infrastructure, total packages can go substantially further, with long-term incentives and share schemes. CMIOSH is generally expected.

What actually moves the number

Risk profile beats everything. The same job title in construction, energy or heavy engineering will pay materially more than in a low-hazard office environment. Higher consequence means higher accountability, and the market prices that.

Qualifications carry a real premium. Industry data consistently shows the NEBOSH General Certificate adding roughly £3,000 to £6,000 over an equivalent unqualified role, with the NEBOSH Diploma commanding a further step up, often £8,000 to £15,000. CMIOSH status becomes close to essential at senior level and is priced accordingly.

Location matters, but not always as you'd expect. London and the South East carry a premium, but so do regions with concentrations of high-hazard industry: nuclear, defence, petrochemicals, which can out-pay the capital for the right specialist.

Scope, not headcount. Multi-site responsibility, complex supply chains, or ownership of a business-critical accreditation will lift a salary further than a couple of direct reports.

What we're seeing in the market right now

Rather than rely on published averages alone, we track live vacancies. Across recent construction and infrastructure roles we've been monitoring:

  • HSE / H&S Advisor roles advertising broadly between £36,000 and £55,000
  • H&S and SHEQ Manager roles typically between £47,000 and £75,000
  • Senior and multi-site Manager roles reaching £75,000+
  • Contract and day-rate H&S Manager assignments running from around £320 to £600 per day

That day-rate spread is worth noting if you're weighing permanent against contract work. The gap can be significant, though it comes with the trade-offs of flexibility and security.

Look past the salary line

A number in isolation tells you very little. Before you accept or reject an offer, look at the whole picture: car or car allowance, bonus structure, pension contribution, holiday, flexible or hybrid working, and, genuinely important in our profession, whether the business will fund your Diploma or chartership.

Plenty of people we work with accept slightly less on base for a business that will invest in their development, or one where safety is visibly backed from the top. That's often the better long-term decision.

A note on how to use this

These are indicative ranges drawn from live market activity and published salary data, and they will vary between businesses. If you're an employer trying to benchmark a role, or a professional trying to work out whether you're being paid fairly, the honest answer is that context matters more than any table.

That's what a conversation is for.

Whether you're benchmarking a role you're about to advertise, or wondering what you should be worth, we'd be glad to give you a straight answer.
